CROP SAFETY

IN CANOLA

INVESTIGATION INTO THE host crop safety of propyzamide applied pspe and post-emergent to canola

Key Points

  • Caution to Canola with PSPE to 2 leaf Propyzamide applications – heavy rainfall after seeding or transient water logging

  • No host crop safety effects in this trial with Post-Em (Canola 4-Leaf) Propyzamide applications

  • Compatible with Clethodim 240g/L @ 500ml/ha for excellent residual grass control

Aim

To investigate host crop safety of Propyzamide when applied PSPE and post-emergent in canola and field peas.

Background

This trial is looking to show to growers the potential different use patterns and safety considerations for Propyzamide when used in PSPE and post-emergent applications. Propyzamide is a Group D herbicide, absorbed through shoots and roots, with its specific mode of action preventing cell division, inhibiting root growth in certain monocots weeds. Edge 900 currently is only registered in Canola for IBS applications at 0.55 kg/ha.

As propyzamide is very reliant on soil moisture and lowering soil temperature, this trial aims to experiment with later applications of propyzamide, to lengthen residual and overall ARG control in Canola.

In this trial Propyzamide will be applied at label and 2x Label rates, at PSPE and Post-emergent timings, in two different Propyzamide formulations. Weed Counts, Crop biomass and Crop Phytotoxicity will be assessed in Canola.

Comments

Caution to Canola applied with PSPE to 2 leaf Propyzamide applications, as heavy rainfall after seeding can result in increased chemical solubility, moving into the root zone of emerging canola. This crop phytotoxicity is further enhanced by transient water logging in young canola, due to the easily damaged hypocotyl.

No host crop safety effects in this trial were observed with Post-Em (Canola 4-Leaf) Propyzamide applications and further trials have shown excellent compatibility with Clethodim 240g/L @ 500ml/ha for excellent knockdown and residual ARG grass control.
